Welcome to Year 5! We are looking forward to getting to know you and for all of the exciting learning we will be doing this year.

Key information

PE Day: Mondays. Children will need a PE kit including black/navy joggers or shorts, black/navy jumper, white t-shirt and appropriate trainers.

Reading books: Your child will be read with or asked about reading at home once a week. Their book will be changed when they have finished it, or sooner if they ask a teacher.

Other: Please record your child's reading on the Go Read/Boom Reader App. Children also have access to Times Tables Rock Stars to help learn and practise multiplication and division facts.

In English

This term, our reading and writing journeys explore exciting themes and different styles of language to help children grow as confident communicators. In reading, pupils will dive into William Grill’s magnificently illustrated book to follow Sir Ernest Shackleton’s heroic Antarctic expedition, building their comprehension, vocabulary, and inference skills. In writing, children will learn how to use a persuasive, professional tone, structured paragraphs, and formal language to craft convincing job applications. We will also will study how different poetic forms, rhythm, and structures shape meaning, experimenting with creative word choices to build vivid imagery. At the end of the term we will practice writing realistic, correctly punctuated dialogue in their storytelling, using speech to reveal character personalities and advance the plot.

In maths

This term, children will build strong foundational knowledge across several core areas of mathematics, developing their problem-solving and reasoning skills along the way. We will be deepening our understanding of numbers up to 4 digits, reading, writing, comparing, and rounding them to secure a firm grasp of number value. We will use mental and written multiplication and division methods, applying these skills to reason about and solve mathematical challenges such as exploring factors and factor pairs.
